By 1980, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation was emerging as a major force in international finance. They did not have a single and distinctive visual identity. A hexagon based on Chinese geomancy, with four poles (四面) and eight directions (八方), was created to bring business and prosperity in all directions. The mark also references the St. Andrew’s cross and bank’s Scottish heritage. An enduring identifier for “the world’s local bank”.
